.something.quick.

the church we go to, 3rd place , has this huge wall on the one side and it's painted with black-board-paint, making it perfect for writing little messages on..months ago (i'm not quite sure how many) we went to an exhibition that was held in the space where we receive the Message on sundays, and we each just wrote a little something something on the wall before leaving..a facebook album with photo's of some of the things people have written on the wall revealed this:

hehe

as 3rd place beautifully puts it: love Jesus, love others..

.some.old.doodles.

i will keep it short and sweet..us illustrators, we doodle..a lot..here are a few of the older ones i have kept..

.post.office.stamp.designs.

one of the illustration class projects we did last year was for the south african post office..we received a list themes, and i chose the year of biodiversity..for this specific theme, we had to design four stamps and a commemorative envelope..at the end of the project, all of the students submitted their designs to the post office, and the best of each theme will be produced and be available in 2011..for these illustrations i used oil paint to do mono-prints for the backgrounds, and water-paint for the main motives, reworked with pen and ink..

.stamp #1: plants & birds.

.stamp #2: mammals.

.stamp #3: fish & insects.

.mountains.are.sleeping.giants.

my friend bernard feeds off of music..it is his every being..he is in a band called stars for eyes with one of his closest friends, warren, but a while ago he was thinking starting a little solo project on the side..he wrote some amazing guitar songs for it, and decided to call this project mountains are sleeping giants..
he asked me to do an illustration for m.a.s.g, and this is what i came up with..

bernard and i have also been thinking about starting out own t-shirt label, ideally doing all the designs as well as the screen printing ourselves..we've only done two test prints, as the start of a long journey of figuring out how to master screen printing, and we used the one m.a.s.g character as our first print design..

even though it obviously needs improvement, i have to admit, it feels pretty darn awesome to see one of my illustrations on a t-shirt..

.HORSE.the.band.

one of the bands my friend bernard introduced me to in the beginning of this year, HORSE the band, toured africa in march/april..at the time i wasn't really too into their music, but bernard convinced us to go watch a few of their shows with him, and even bought us tickets for one of them..

they ran a t-shirt designing competition before the tour, and the winning design would be produced as merch..i entered a very rushed design on the closing day, because i had actually forgotten about it..

surprisingly my design ended up in the top 7..

i just have to add: since the four HORSE the band shows we saw, they have been one of my favorite bands..thanks bernard..

.way back when.

these are postcards i did for class in April last year..the theme was exploring the moving image, and were meant to advertise a film festival..i focused on thought- and dream travel, as i figure it's these things that move people and inspire them to create beautiful films..in addition, each postcard had to have a design principle as a sub-theme..

.and finally i start a blog.

i've been thinking about starting a blog for quite some time, and the amount of work i want to post has been piling up..so here it is ladies and gentlemen..

i should probably quickly explain the reasoning behind the title of my blog..it's basically my thoughts after finishing most of my illustrations; that i had no idea it would turn out the way it did..i also have a habit of starting a drawing with a random shape, and then adding details as i go, and ending up with something i would have never thought of initially..

i hope you enjoy..i sure enjoy making them..
